So recently we just purchased Server data center. I recently created a new file server that I am building on server standard. When I tried to activate the license on the server it kept erroring out. I get the message “The product key you entered will not work with this edition of Windows Server ” I tried doing it through the slgr dos command with the same result.

After doing some research I hear with data center licenses in visualization you have to install it a different way. That is what im trying to figure out is how.

I just set this up the same way I normally spin up VM’s I just created a vm installed server choose standard gui from the install selection and tried to activate once it was done. Is there something I am missing?

Well, if you plan to use a Datacenter license, you will want to select one of the 2 Datacenter options. Yeah just use the right key from your volume agreement – are you definitely using the right install media?

Yea its the media and key that came with the license we bought. I have read where we need to create a new host and install and activate it on the new esx host and then create the VMs for under that host. Is there a way I can check what version this license key supports? The license was purchased from a Microsoft reseller my company goes through. It was prior to me coming here so I dont know much about it and the person that was in my place is no longer here so I am trying to figure all this out Is it volume or retail though?

Basically do you know that the key is right for the media you’re using? Make sure you’re downloading and not R2 assuming your key is not for R2.

Which did you select? I know there was an old thread that discussed the legal implications of doing this kind of switch, and IIRC it turns out to be OK, but caveat emptor.

You need to use the corresponding key to the edition you installed Standard.. Datacenter won’t know or care about VMware, all you should need to do is use the right key. That’s probably why it isn’t accepting your Datacenter license — it expects a Standard key.
