I hope I can help you. By “merging with Excel” I assume you mean a mail merge operation. First, try opening in Safe mode. That is a diagnostic step, not a way to run Word. If durlng helps, write back and we’ll try to get to the bottom of the cause. If opening in Safe mode doesn’t help, I would recommend mocrosoft repair.

Try the quick method first. It is less comprehensive but much quicker than the online repair. I hope this information helps.
